SLOT MACHINES

The History of Slot Machines

Casinos installed the traditional slot machines to divert the casual gamers. This innovation however proved to be a monstrous success. Eventually slot machines became the most popular and the most popular games in the business bringing in almost 60 percent of annual gaming profits in the United States. It did not require any gambling knowledge and this worked to its advantage.

The forerunner of the Slot Machine came into formation in 1891 by Sittman and Pitt of Brooklyn, New York. But this game was based on poker and it became immensely popular among the bar-goers. The players just inserted a nickel and pulled the lever or the handle and that would do the trick!

There was no direct payout mechanism. Players would get a free drink or a cigar when they came upon combinations like a pair of Kings or a Royal Flush. The payout system used to be different in each establishment. It was also customary to raise the house edge by using such practices as e.g. removing the Ten of Spades and the Jack of Hearts from the "deck" to reduce the chance of getting a Royal Flush by 50%.

In 1895, Charles Fey of San Francisco, California, invented the "one-armed bandit", the traditional slot machine we are familiar with. It was  a machine with three spinning reels containing five types of symbol – horseshoes, diamonds, spades, hearts and a Liberty Bell. The latter became the name of the machine which was also able to pay out automatically on the basis of the symbol combinations. Three bells in a row produced the biggest payoff. Liberty Bell turned out be a big sucess.

Slip in the coin, pull the handle and if you are lucky, the tinkling sound of metal in the collection bin may fill your ears. The older slot machines used to be mechanical devices  with shafts and gears installed within them which would start rotating a few reels as soon as you pull the lever. The spinning reels will be brought to halt using a braking system, and the payout system gets input from sensors to know the position of the reels.

…And now.

This game has evolved in its duration of existence. From mechanicaldevices to electronic systems and now with the initiation of softwareprograms, slot machines are driven by computers and their complexcalculations.

The best part of Internet gaming is that  you do not need to go to a casino to play the slot game, its right there in your computer waiting for you to slip in the coins. The advent of the digital world has made gambling possible online and also pays to cash if you win through a digital credit system.
