Online Roulette – Learn the Online Casino Game of Roulette

What do I need to know?

A roulette wheel, typically about 3 feet in diameter, has pockets numbered 1 to 36, alternating between the colours black and red. Then there is also either one zero (green) - in European roulette - or two zeroes (green) - in American roulette. This gives the American version a house advantage of 5.3% against 2.7% of the European one, which also means that the chances of winning in an European table is slightly higher than the American table, provided all other factors remain the same..

The numbers are ordered in such a manner that as much balance as possible is achieved among "high and low", "red and black" and "odd and even" numbers.

The players can place a variety of bets, as explained below. The betting is closed when the dealer calls 'No more bets'. Then he spins the wheel in one direction and a ball in the opposite direction. The ball keeps on rollong in the slightly tilted circular track of the roulette table until it loses momentum and falls on the wheel and then into one of the 37 (European version) or 38 (American version) numbered pockets. Any bets placed on that number wins according to pre-defined odds, as explained below.

How do I place the bet?

As already pointed out, a whole multitude of betting options are available while playing roulette. It is very important that you position your chips precisely, as explained below (they may vary slightly from site to site):

Straight Bet

You bet any single number, including zero (0). You must place the chip directly on the number.

Split Bet

You bet on any two adjacent numbers. You must place the chip on the line between the two numbers.

Street Bet

You bet on three numbers. You must place the chip at the start of the selected row of three numbers.

Square Bet

You bet on a block of four numbers. You must place the chip on the spot in the center of the four numbers.

Line Bet

You bet on six numbers comprising two rows of three numbers, for example: 13, 14, 15 and 16, 17, 18. You must place the chip on the intersection of the line running between the two selected rows and the outside line.

Column Bet

You bet on one of the three vertical columns. You must place the chip at the bottom of the column in one of the three boxes marked "2 to 1".

Dozen Bet

You bet on a group of twelve numbers (1-12 or 13-24 or 25-36). You must place the chip on one of the three boxes marked First 12, Second 12 or 3rd 12..

Red/Black, Even/Odd, High/Low

You bet on a colour (Red or Black), on even or odd numbers, or on the numbers 1-18 (Low) or 19-36 (High). You must place the chip one of the boxes marked Even or Odd or coloured Red or Black, or 1 to 18, or 19 to 36..

What makes me a winner?

The standard payout rules apply to both the forms of the game, online or real brick and mortar casinos. For both American and European roulette, the payouts are based on the odds for 36 numbers. So the roulette payout rules below cover the player possibilities for both American and European roulette.

  • Straight bet: A bet on a single number. Payout: 35-1.
  • Split bet: A bet on any line dividing any two adjacent numbers, so that either of the two numbers will be a winner. Payout: 17-1.
  • Street bet: A bet on three numbers in any vertical row on the table by placing the chip on the line at the start of that row, so that any of the three numbers will be a winner. Payout:11-1.
  • Corner bet or Square bet: A bet on the middle of four numbers, so that one of these four numbers will be the winner. Payout: 8-1.
  • Line bet: A bet on six numbers comprising two adjacent rows by placing the chip on the outside of the lines splitting the two rows of numbers, so that one of the six numbers will be the winner. Payout: 5-1.
  • Column bet: A bet on one of the three vertical columns by placing the chip at the bottom of the columns. Payout: 2-1.If 0 comes up, all column bets lose.
  • Dozen bet: A bet on 12 numbers by placing the chip on First 12, Second 12 or Third 12. Payout : 2-. If 0 comes up, all dozen bets lose.
  • Even-Money bet: A bet on 18 numbers by placing the chip on either Even, Odd, Red, Black, 1-18 or 19-36.. Payout:1-1 (even-money). If 0 comes up, all odd and even bets lose

A point to be noted

As mentioned above, the house has an edge of 5.3% or 2.7% based on what table it is, there is no escape on that. It can be proved mathematically that a combination of bets will also have the same of 5.3. In other words 5.26% of each bet, combined, would work out to be 5.26% of the total bet. So what really is the trick to winning at roulette? A simple suggestion would be to hedge your bets.

So for example, assume that you were betting on black, you could circumvent that bet a little by betting on the third column. The third column has 8 reds and only 4 blacks, so a bet there covers almost half of the red numbers. Almost half of the red numbers covered, and all of the black numbers covered gives you pretty good coverage.
