President Barack Obama told representatives from the National Conference of State Legislatures last week that the stimulus funds will not be available for such projects as casinos, aquariums and zoos, golf courses and swimming pools. A New Jersey congressman, Rep Frank LoBiondo, said last Friday that such restrictions on federal stimulus money are hurting gaming destinations like Atlantic City, and he is seeking to repeal a provision banning the use of funds for casinos or other gaming establishments. Raymond Lesniak, a New Jersey state senator  announced this week a lawsuit against the Justice Department, in order to overturn the US ban on gambling. He wants to make gambling an active industry in New Jersey. Lesniak believes that sports betting in casinos, at racetracks, online and by telephone could generate $100 million a year in tax revenue for his state. Read more ..

Vishnu Surya Wagh, the spokesman of the Goan Congress party told reporters that the six off-shore casinos in the state provide jobs to around 2,500 Goan youths. "They will be rendered jobless if these casinos are shut," he said.

cnews, the Canadian news site, reports that a Wasaga Beach retiree fed last December $60 into a two-penny slot machine named the Buccaneer and thought he had won when the machine's lights and bells went off, the screen indicating that he had hit a $42.9-million jackpot. However, a staff of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp (OLG) told him the machine had malfunctioned and offered him two, then four, buffet dinners. OLG says such a malfunction has never happened before. But Pawel Kusznirewicz, the 55 year old slot player, served the OLG with a statement of claim this Tuesday demanding the $42.9 million, along with $3 million in damages. Read more ..
