New advertising rules governing online casino gambling in UK to be put in place
New terms would affect Internet gaming sites, bingo halls, online casino and other betting services and Television would be a new source of advertisements
The Advertising Standards Authority and Gambling Commission is drafting new advertising rules for casinos that is expected to be announced this summer. The new draft is expected to loosen up the advertising rules that relates to casinos. The new rules, which would affect Internet gaming sites, bingo halls, online casino and other betting services, are set to be made effective with the enactment of the Gambling Act of 2005 that is due to take effect in September 2007.
The ASA aims to provide a single and coordinated set of rules for all sectors of the gambling industry. After these rules are made effective casinos will be able to advertise in a wider range of areas than they can now and one of these new sources would be the Television. It is expected that online betting sites based outside will be banned from advertising in the UK once the new changes are put in place.
The current set of rules that control gambling advertising is around forty years old and is extremely restrictive, so these new rules are expected to be met with some enthusiasm. The Gambling Commission is going to make agreeing to these new norms a requirement for obtaining a gamblers operators license and in addition to this, the Secretary of State for Culture will have the authority to increase gambling advertising restrictions if need arises.
The National Lottery will continue to be under its own rules for advertising.
